Blue Life – A Pledge To The Future
As a major producer in the global consumer goods market, VitrA is aware of its responsibilities in terms of environmental sustainability. In order to show its commitment to sustainable production, VitrA has set up a series of guidelines that go under the name of Blue Life, which encompass both the production process and the use of the final product. VitrA upholds Blue Life as a production, design and management philosophy – from the extraction of raw materials for production all the way to the finished product.
The VitrA plants are heavily invested in technologies that minimize resource use as well as improve recovery and recycling rates. Through a series of stringent measures, water use during production has been cut by nearly a third, while consumption of power fell by 15 percent in all VitrA manufacturing sites over the last three years. By lowering the firing temperature of kilns and increasing the durability of sanitaryware units to thermal shock, VitrA achieves a 30 percent reduction in scrap waste and 15 percent reduction in natural gas consumption. By recycling the waste heat of tile kilns in the drying process, VitrA reduced its natural gas consumption for tile production by 45 percent in the first quarter of 2010.
VitrA’ products are also adapted to be more efficient in terms of water and energy use. New WC pans, urinals and faucets by VitrA’s design team save over 190 tons of water a year at the end user level, ensuring significant reductions in power consumption and carbon emissions. For example, Matteo Thun’s Water Jewels bathtub lowers the internal depth of the unit to 30cm from the industry standard of 38-44cm, thereby encouraging consumers to use less water. Meanwhile Ross Lovegrove’s MOD washbasins are only 6cm deep, which reduces resource use in production and helps consumers save water. On the cutting edge of product development, VitrA recently launched a waterless urinal in the Arkitekt series and has also presented the world’s most water-efficient WC Pans. Through continued research and development and with the help of the new Innovation Center, VitrA ensures that more sustainable products are in the pipeline, carrying on the Blue Life pledge for the future.
